I have come back from the yearly Breath and Life Mastery Training from Global Breathing Awareness. Every time I am healing deeper layers of my own emotional body, grow personally and professionally. And integrating the concept of the emotional body on a deeper level.
Today I want to focus on what is commonly known as the emotional body or pain body. The emotional body, pain body is a central concept in Rebirth Breath Therapy and Rebirthing Breathwork, and I am integrating a deeper layer of it as I am witnessing another dark night of the soul at the moment. My emotional body is more present than ever. Old sticky feelings have being triggered in the past months, especially last month, and memories of my teenage and adolescent year's of not belonging, being left alone, being not enough have been coming up. Voilà, this is my emotional body saying hi - again!
Healing your emotional body is the key for your healing, lasting success and being happy in fulfilled in life - in any area of your life. Eckhart Tolle coins the term pain body referring to the emotional body and sees it as a separate identity living inside of us.
The pain-body wants to survive, just like every other entity in existence, and it can only survive if it gets you to unconsciously identify with it.
- Eckhart Tolle
What is the emotional body?
Your emotional body is intricately linked with your physical body because your physically body directly responds to your emotions. Finish researchers from Aalto University have mapped out how we experience emotions in the physical body in 2014.
Research furthermore shows that emotions are stored in our cells.
“...During these times of trauma or injury, our fascia system stores a “holographic” image of our body’s position, complete with all the fear, anger, sadness, etc. that was present at that time. Sometimes, our consciousness actually leaves our body if the situation is too traumatic for us to handle as it’s happening (flight and fright response). That is why the fascia has often been called the “handle of the consciousness”. - Myofacial Release Centre
The storage of information in our cells is what we call cellular imprint in Rebirth Breath Therapy and Rebirthing Breathwork.
Emotional Body: The imprinting of information starts in the womb
Your emotional body is linked to the deepest, most negative though you have about yourself and life. This thought, as well as other negative thoughts about life and ourselfes, are low-energy, low-frequency clusters. All experiences and energetic patterns start imprinting, possibly in the womb already, and at birth. There is a growing body of scientific research suggesting that fetuses are affected by their mothers emotions and communicate with their mother. As a fetus and newborn, we don't yet have the capacity to cognitively process our experience, we rather have a sensory experience of life. Also, until the age of approximately three years, a baby does not have the ability to discriminate between themselves and others. They take everything personally because the psychological split/ ego development has not happened yet. Later on, with time and as the development of the babies' brain continues, these experiences are intellectualized and thought clusters and beliefs are formed around their experiences.
When does the emotional body show up?
Every emotional body is unique and directs and assesses our experiences accordingly. When we are triggered in a negative way, we experience an uncomfortable feeling, memory or emotion or thought. (Same goes for "positive triggers", that trigger a positive memory etc. btw.) Immediately our energy field contracts, and we feel the familiar feeling of "being alone", "not good enough" etc. In Rebirth Therapy we refer to the cellular imprint of the information - experiences, thoughts, feelings, emotions - stored in our body.
According to Dr. Joe Dispenza this wave of emotions lasts approximately 90 seconds to two minutes. This means that you have the ability to choose to engage in your pain body or focus your attention on thoughts that give you energy after the "wave of emotions is over". You have the ability to pull yourself out of the spiral of dense and draining feelings and thoughts of your pain body.
When the pain is too heavy...
In my experience, yes, it is true that the emotions that got triggered last not that long. However, sometimes pain is so engrained in our physical and emotional body - meaning: we are so used to and addicted to it - that the wave is much longer, especially if you have (un)consciously suppressed or covered up that pain for years. It is a huge success already that you are able to bring awareness to that wave of pain! The only thing you can do is witness that wave and its heavy and sticky emotions and allow them to be. Practice Conscious Connected Breathing - if you are familiar with the technique. This breathing is a life changer, also in moments like these.
Rebirthing Breathwork to integrate and heal your pain body
Conscious Connected Breathing as we practice it in Rebirthing Breathwork and Rebirth Breath Therapy is in essence the pranayama of newborn babies and supports us to keep our (life) energy flowing. Especially, heavy and sticky emotions suck up our energy, and we feel depressed, low, disconnected etc. That is why, when you keep breathing through them in a conscious way, you help your energy body to integrate and heal them.
In my experience, in some cases, the energy of our pain body is so heavy, that we may drift off, fall asleep/ go unconscious. Usually, after the unconsciousness period, we feel lighter and "a (energetic) weight has lifted off our shoulders or chest". Here you can see the Infinite Intelligence of your body at work. Our body and all bodies, life itself, always seeks to restore harmony and love.
Breathwork as a tool for emotional release
A lot of breathwork disciplines and group breathwork sessions focus on the emotional release only, as for example Transformational Breath - and not on the actual integration after the release. In the integration process is where the healing happens, and that happens when you keep breathing after an emotional release.
In Rebirth Breath Therapy and Rebirthing Breathwork we do not encourage an emotional or physical release, we want you to go further and experience bliss and peace - and that usually comes after the release. This is another reason why we do not encourage emotional or physical drama in a session, but to stay focused on the breath and literally "breathe through it".
Another essential fact is that Rebirth Breath Therapy gives you deeper understanding of your emotional body. Your breath is the bridge between your thoughts, emotions and memories: The way you breathe directly affects the way you feel and vice versa. The way you breathe affects your energy and mood directly. Bringing awareness to your breath, learning to breathe energy as well as air, and becoming aware of your breathing patterns will organically get you in touch with your (subconscious) thoughts, emotions, feelings, and memories.
Rebirth Breath Therapy gives you a code to understand your emotional body.
An energetic release is a prerequisite to shifting your awareness and energy to a state of harmony and peace. A release gives you the ability to choose how to focus your awareness because an energetic pattern has been released which kept you feeling and thinking in a certain way.
Forgiveness as key to (Emotional) Healing
The breath is what moves and clears out your energy, however, the mind plays a crucial role in your healing as well. Moving towards life-affirming thoughts and healing your past is another key component.
Life-affirming thoughts are thougts that give you (life) energy. "I got this.", "I am a unique gift to this world", "I matter." are thoughts that give you energy, that affirm your life energy. In turn "How could I be so stupid?!", "Ufff I will never make it.", "I am a desaster." drain your (life) energy and make you contract and withdraw from life.
When you are triggered it is important to relax, step back and be able to observe what is going on in your mind and your emotional body. It will be a fireworks of deathiest thoughts, denying your divinity: Denying that you matter here on this planet, that you are lovealbe and perfect as you are, that you are more then enough.
Affirmations work perfectly to "correcting" the belief in ourselves that we are not important, for example. With conscious breathing and affirmations, I have come a long way healing myself, gaining more emotional stability. Last week during purification practices, forgiveness came up for me in a powerful way and I became aware of all that negative self-talk in my head - again - forgiving myself for all of it. And experiencing how much weight is lifted from my heart by practising forgiveness. A journey to be continued.
In A Course in Miracles, it says that our function here in life is forgiveness. Forgiveness releases all anger, resentment, grievances, whatever emotion or memory is in our emotional body to the vibration of love. You have a choice to forgive yourself and others, or keep carrying the energetic weight of that memory with you.
Forgiveness is a correcting force that gradually cleans up our minds towards love and peace.
"I forgive myself for everything completely."
Affirmations by Sondra Ray that inspire me on that note of forgiveness and letting go life-draining thoughts:
"I am fasting from that which would bring me down."
"My conversations are life-affirming."
"I am more interested in the vibration of God than my problems."
"When my attention is on Presence, I bring what I need into this dimension."
